A copy of a group photograph of the chorus with members listed on back. Welsh immigrants' skills were vital to the development of the slate industry in New York and Vermont. They not only brought quarrying experience but also language, culture, and traditions of their native land. The Welsh Male Chorus of Poultney was perhaps the most celebrated of the many choral groups organized by Welsh immigrants and their descendants in the Slate Valley. Formally reorganized in 1939, the choir originated from a successful bid by a group of quarrymen to win an eisteddfod, a Welsh cultural festival and competition, held in Granville in 1931. Regularly rehearsing at the Welsh Presbyterian Church of Poultney, the "professional caliber" of this workingman's choir became well known across New England and New York. Welsh-language hymns, folksongs, and the ddraig goch (red dragon) upon their white stoles testified to the choir's cultural heritage. There are twenty three men, one woman, and one boy in the chorus. Chorus photograph from 1946. In front: Herbie Jones, Chorus Mascot. Front row, left to right: David Jones, William Parker, William W. Roberts, Mrs. Gladys M. Jones (accompaniest), Evan G.
