They not only brought quarrying experience but also language, culture, and traditions of their native land. The Welsh Male Chorus of Poultney was perhaps the most celebrated of the many choral groups organized by Welsh immigrants and their descendants in the Slate Valley. Formally reorganized in 1939, the choir originated from a successful bid by a group of quarrymen to win an eisteddfod, a Welsh cultural festival and competition, held in Granville in 1931. Regularly rehearsing at the Welsh Presbyterian Church of Poultney, the "professional caliber" of this workingman's choir became well known across New England and New York. Welsh-language hymns, folksongs, and the ddraig goch (red dragon) upon their white stoles testified to the choir's cultural heritage. |
