Started work at Fair Haven, Marble and Marbleized Slate Company there a few years - furnishing and cutting slate- (54 years?) at VT. Structural until recently occasionally in NY state recently - never owned quarry in NY - Fair Haven and Poultney Eureka Quarry still has quarry stick products? tested slate for color and quality in whole district (25 miles long) geologists say line is between South Poultney and Fair Haven - north of line is "unfading slate" south of line is "weathering"green slate vein Main uses? some gravestones roofing-not major part building slate-cut and furnished for structures as veneer -stairs treads, etc.-interior finish work this was bulk of our product. CEO of VT Structural Slate - father had been manager of original company (Fair Haven Marbleized) Many ups and downs in industry, especially in structural slate unions? never enter industry - only spotly we had one - no great change in wage structure. Smithsonian Museum made video of the company. Quarry sticks? 25-30 years in his experience when did it end? 1980's "cable ways" used with derrick any other things you would like to say? cables, sticks, etc, replaced by roads, trucks why did change come? easier, less dangerous. |
