Interview with various Gwyneth Wood in the Welsh room at Green Mountain College. She is speaking to a group of elementary school students. Selections from the interview: Story of a German immigrant who moved to Poultney, VT after World War II (Margaret Bouchard). She kept hearing about the Welsh but couldn't find any information. She took a tape recorder and interviewed older Welsh immigrants. They told her about the slate throughout the Slate Valley. When I was a little girl growing up in Granville, there was always one person working in every store who spoke and understood Welsh so that they could communicate the prices. She put an ad in the Granville Sentinel. She asked the Welsh to fill out a questionaire with information about why they immigrated to the United States and where they came from originally in Wales. Most towns had two Welsh churches including West Pawlet, Poultney, Granville. The church in South Poultney was in "Wells Pound". She set up the Welsh room/museum at Green Mountain College. Some of the things in the room came from my family. (Tells history of family--her father was a quarry worker at Penrhyn Slate Company in Bethesda, Wales. Her parents, John and Mary Davies, immigrated to the Slate Valley after her father was blacklisted from working in the quarries. They were choir members who sang throughout England and Wales to support the striking workers. Stories about her family traveling through Ellis Island. Highlights Welsh language. |
