This collection contains 1 box and 35 ledgers. The material in this collection is from both the Owen W. Owens' Sons, Incorporated and the Progressive Slate Company. The Owens family was very heavily involved with the Progressive Slate Company, making up the entire board of directors at one point. This explains why the ledgers from this company came to the museum with the Owens business records at the same time. All were from the estate of David O. Owens Jr. Many of the account ledgers leave gaps in time. Many seem to have near duplicate information written in them. Some of the ledgers were reused, with company account information beginning in the back of the book pertaining to completely different years, and being of a different nature than the material in the front of the book. Box 1 of the collection is an assortment of material on the Owen W. Owens' Sons, Inc. and the Progressive Slate Company. Older leases and deeds are in folder 1, and shed light on how these slate companies got the rights to quarries and from whom. Volume 1-4 contain the 1914 Act of Incorporation, director and stockholder minutes from 1914-1935, and other material on stocks and stock holders. Volume 4 contains stock reports from 1930-1933, along with statements issued to Owens' Sons from the Vermont Weathering Green Slate Co., Inc, from 1931-1936. Volume 5-17 contain account information on Owens' Sons, Inc. from 1909-1936. These books contain numerous different types of account records. Some examples include company expenditures, accounts receivable and payable, production figures, customer information, purchases, etc. See individual volume description for more exact detail. Volume 18-21 contain information on shipping records from individual quarries in operation under the Owens' Sons, Inc., along with the totals added up for these quarries. Volume 22-27 are pay registers for hourly employees and salaried employees, listing hours worked, pay rate, total pay, etc. Some of these financial records are broken down by specific quarry. Volume 28-30 are Owens' Sons, Inc. business statements/trial balance material which can be used to follow the financial situation of the company. Box 1, folder 3 has similar material. Volume 31-35 are ledgers from the Progressive Slate Co., Inc. Company and stock holder minutes, account books, and stock books cover the entire existence of this company. |
